CLINICS FIGHT TO DENY ABORTION INFORMATION
(VO)
THIS YEAR A NEW LAW IN CALIFORNIA INSTRUCTS PREGNANCY CLINICS TO GIVE PREGNANT WOMEN INFORMATION ON WHERE TO GET FREE OR LOW COST ABORTIONS.
ONE CLINIC IN THE SAN DIEGO SUBURB OF EL CAJON (KUH-HONE) IS FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT TO NOT GIVE OUT THAT INFORMATION.
THE CLINIC INSTEAD WANTS TO OFFER PREGNANT WOMEN DIAPERS, CAR SEATS, PRENATAL CARE, AND COUNSELING IN PLACE OF ABORTION.
IT WANTS TO ENCOURAGE WOMEN TOWARD BEING A PARENT OR ADOPTING OUT THE CHILD.
THE DIRECTOR OF THE CLINIC SAYS IT DOES NOT BELIEVE IN ABORTION.
(SOT/VO)
(Josh McClure/East County Pregnancy Care Clinic director) "I don't want to put up a sign telling you where you can go for an abortion. The sign is not up here now because it's unconstitutional."
EARLY IN THIS NEW YEAR, SOME CLINICS IN THE GOLDEN STATE, INCLUDING THE ONE IN EL CAJON, HAVE NOT YET COMPLIED WITH THE NEW LAW.
THE CLINIC WILL LIKELY FIGHT THIS IN COURT FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT YEAR.
BRITAIN WILL NOT USE VELLUM ANYMORE
LAWS IN BRITAIN WILL HAVE A NEW LOOK TO THEM SOON.
THE HOUSE OF COMMONS AGREED TO CHANGE THE MATERIAL THEY PUBLISH THEIR NEW LAWS ON.
THEY'LL USE CHEAPER ARCHIVAL PAPER INSTEAD OF THE ANIMAL SKIN PARCHMENT PAPER COMMONLY KNOWN AS VELLUM.
THAT MATERIAL IS MORE EXPENSIVE AND HAS BEEN USED TO ARCHIVE NEWLY CREATED LAWS FOR CENTURIES.
ONE OF THE OLDEST SURVIVING DOCUMENTS ON VELLUM IS THE "MAGNA CARTA" DATING BACK TO 12-15.
THE CHANGE IN MATERIALS WILL BEGIN NEXT MONTH.
