A NEW BILL HAS RACED TO GEORGIA STATE SENATE TODAY.
SENATE BILL 414 WILL LIMIT THE SCOPE OF POLICE CHASES HERE IN THE PEACH STATE.
IT GIVES POLICE AGENCIES PERMISSION TO PURSUE SUSPECTS IN THE MOST SERIOUS OF CASES.
THOSE INCLUDE CASES OF MURDER, KIDNAPPING, RAPE, ARMED ROBBERY, OR ANY OFFENSE PUTTING A PERSON NEAR DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.
THIS COMES ONE MONTH AFTER A COLLEGE PARK POLICEMAN PURSUED A STOLEN CAR SUSPECT LEADING TO THE DEATH OF A GRANDMOTHER AND HER TWO GRANDCHILDREN.
A STATE LAWMAKER RECALLS THE TRAGEDY OF THAT DAY.
State Sen. Gail Davenpart/(D) Jonesboro
"It was horrible, and since then things haven't gotten any better. We want to make sure that innocent people do not lose their lives, and that a police chase is called off if there would be danger to the public."
BY RULE, THE BILL HAS TO PASS IN THE SENATE BY MONDAY IN ORDER FOR THE HOUSE TO DEBATE THE BILL.
